Time-Dependent Tsunami Source Following the 2018 Anak Krakatau Volcano Eruption Inferred from Nearby Tsunami Recordings

چکیده
The eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano, Indonesia, on 22 December 2018 induced a destructive tsunami (the Sunda Strait tsunami), which was recorded by four nearby tidal gauges. In this study we invert records and recover generation process. Two sources are obtained, static one instant initial water elevation time-dependent accounting for continuous evolution height. results found to reproduce recordings more satisfactorily. complete process lasts approximately 9 min features two-stage with similar intensity. Each stage about 3.5 elevates volume 0.13 km3. time, duration volcano in general agree seismic geomorphological interpretations. We also test different sizes potential source region, lead maximum wave height area, but all show robust feature two stages generation. Our imply complex during eruption.

Tsunami wave generation by the eruption of underwater volcano
Eruption of volcanoes represents one of important origins of tsunami waves and is responsible for most catastrophic tsunami (Krakatau, 1883; Thira, BC). The products of volcano eruption include solids, liquids (lava) and gases. The present article presents hydrodynamic model of relatively slow process of eruption, with domination of liquids. The process of underwater eruption of lava causes the...
متن کاملSimulation of the trans-oceanic tsunami propagation due to the 1883 Krakatau volcanic eruption
The 1883 Krakatau volcanic eruption has generated a destructive tsunami higher than 40 m on the Indonesian coast where more than 36 000 lives were lost. Sea level oscillations related with this event have been reported on significant distances from the source in the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Evidence of many manifestations of the Krakatau tsunami was a subject of the intense discussi...
متن کاملHybrid Tsunami Modeling Infrastructure: Tsunami Source Data and Bathymetry Editor
The important part of the tsunami science is focused on studying the considerable influence of natural geographical objects, like islands and coast bathymetry, on the tsunami waves. Currently, such investigations are mostly implementing by physical modeling allowing obtaining good results on impacting submarine barriers on tsunami wave propagation but actually very expensive. We are designing a...
متن کاملMapping Coherent, Time-varying Wavefronts from the 2011 Tohoku Tsunami into Enhanced, Time-dependent Warning Messages
Recent results are presented to illustrate how predictions of tsunami wave impact and tsunami warning messages can be improved by including information about multiple, large-amplitude wave arrivals over longer time durations and at refined spatial resolution. A deployment of ocean bottom seismometers off the coast of southern California recorded the March 2011 Tohoku tsunami on 22 differential ...
متن کاملNumerical modeling of tsunami waves generated by the flank collapse of the Cumbre Vieja Volcano (La Palma, Canary Islands): Tsunami source and near field effects
[1] In this work, we study waves generated by the potential collapse of the west flank of the Cumbre Vieja Volcano (CVV; La Palma, Canary Island, Spain) through numerical simulations performed in two stages: (i) the initial slide motion and resulting free surface elevation are first calculated using a 3D Navier-Stokes model; (ii) generated waves are then input into a 2D (horizontal) Boussinesq ...
